“ConsumIA,” behind a request to an artificial intelligence system

EUGLOB has featured in a short report produced by UABMèdia, the communications platform of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, on the risks and opportunities associated with the use of artificial intelligence. The Centre of Excellence has taken part in this initiative, following in the footsteps of our collaborator Juan Antonio Cordero, who published an article in El Confidencial  in November 2025 on the energy consumption of these information systems, and our guest Thomas Christiansen, who delivered the II Annual Jean Monnet Lecture on the EU’s regulatory capacity in new technologies. Our Project Assistant, Albert Batlle, spoke to the campus media, explaining the debates and factors surrounding European digital policies.

Reading recommendation: Exporting the European third way: strategic narratives of a value-based digital order.

Leo Thüer, Julia Pohle, Milan Schröder and Alissa Steer, through their article published in the review 
European Politics and Society on April 16 2026, analize the narrative of a ‘European Third Way’ as a core element of the EU’s discourse on ‘digital sovereignty’ and its external digital agenda. The article reviews the academic literature on the European Union’s digital policy agenda and argues that official communications of the EU institutions unveil the intention of creating a human-centred and value-based digital policy approach distinct from the United States’ market-driven model and China’s state-centric digital authoritarianism. At the same time, however, the article lists the nuances and limitations of these narratives afirming that the EU is missing an opportunity to rethink its digital policy approach in the context of geopolitical change.

This project builds upon the work developed by the Jean Monnet Chair in European Policies (EUPOL) between 2018 and 2025 at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and aims at its structural consolidation. It also builds upon the outstanding track and project leadership developed by the Institute of European Studies, the Government and Governance Consolidated Research Group, the Global Intel Research Group, and the Observatory of European Foreign Policy for the last 15 years. The project also aims to reinforce the extensive inter-universities collaboration and joint activities already developed by the EUPOL Jean Monnet Chair within the framework of the Jean Monnet Spanish Partnership (BACE’s Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, Universitat Pompeu Fabra;  MACIES Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, Universidad Carlos III Madrid and the Jean Monnet OpenEUdebate Network, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and) launched in 2022, to strengthen the Jean Monnet epistemic community in Spain.
